EA Giving Tuesday
Donation matching initiative
January 26, 2022, 8:19 pm EST
Facebook is now reporting match amounts to Giving Tuesday donors! If you’d like to see the match amounts for your own donations, you can click here from your computer. Or, if you’re on a phone, you can open the Facebook app and go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Facebook Pay > Activity > See All.
Relatedly, if you're an admin on a Facebook page of a nonprofit signed up for Facebook Payments, then you can find the match amounts for your nonprofit with the instructions with these instructions, under "For nonprofits."
We're eager to report on total match amounts, but we first need to wait until Facebook reports the match amounts per fundraiser page. We're hoping that Facebook shares these amounts soon.
Giving Tuesday, November 30, 2021, 11:11 am EST
Despite the payment errors faced by many donors this morning, we estimate that $1,365,817 USD has been donated to our fundraisers towards highly effective nonprofits.
We are unsure at this time how much of this amount was intended for the 100% match vs the 10% match.
We expect to have details on match amounts sometime in January 2022.
We're preparing for Giving Tuesday, November 30, 2021—join us!
EA Giving Tuesday organizes people around a shared goal: to direct matching funds to highly effective nonprofits that they wouldn't otherwise receive. This year, EA Giving Tuesday's main focus is Facebook's $8 million USD match on Giving Tuesday. The match is coming up soon on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. EST / 5:00 a.m. PST.
The EA Giving Tuesday team supports both donors and highly effective nonprofits, to make it as easy as possible to participate in this unique matching opportunity.
What are Facebook's matching program details this year? Facebook is offering $8 million USD in matching funds, with a 100% match for the first $2 million USD and a 10% match ($6 million USD) for the following $60 million USD. There will be a match limit of $20,000 USD per donor and $100,000 USD per nonprofit. The 100% match will begin on November 30, 2021, at 8:00 am EST (that’s 5:00 am PST) and will end seconds later. We expect that donating very fast will be especially important this year.
How has it gone in previous years? Over the past three years (2018, 2019 and 2020), the hundreds of donors that were coordinated by EA Giving Tuesday donated over $3.4 million to highly effective nonprofits, and overall 42% of donated amounts ($1.4 million) received a match from Facebook. This section of our 2020 retrospective breaks down donated and matched amounts year by year.
Who organizes EA Giving Tuesday? The EA Giving Tuesday team and Rethink Charity organize this project. EA Giving Tuesday is motivated by effective altruism (EA), and many people in the EA community help us immensely.
Donors outside of the United States: Unfortunately, this donation matching opportunity may be less valuable for you, because of potential for lower donation limits and loss of tax benefits. Please see our FAQ entry on this for more info.
